Suppressing your thoughts known as Thought Suppression is an attempt to avoid thinking about something we would just soon forget. For instance, if we get a bad grade, criticized from our boss, or do something embarrassing, we want to forget it.
The ‘Dual Process Model of Thinking’ explains how thought suppression succeeds or fails. The automatic part of the system, called the monitoring process, searches for evidence that the unwanted thought is about to intrude on consciousness. Once the unwanted thought is detected, the more controlled part of the system, called the operating process, comes into play. This is the effortful conscious attempt to distract oneself by finding something else to think about. When operating process functions, thought suppression occurs.
However, when we become too tired or preoccupied, the operating process does not work efficiently since it requires effort to function. This leads to failure to suppress thoughts as the effortless monitoring system continues to look for the unwanted thoughts (bringing them to surface).
Social psychologists and health psychologists agree that thought suppression is not the most efficient way to avoid thinking about something. They suggest that writing down your thoughts or talking about your thoughts work a lot better. I agree with them, because when you write or talk about your thoughts, you no longer require the operating process to help you hold back your thoughts.
